The high level basic is already assembled, and in the same bag that is on
the front of the card is the spur that has the 5 different connectors for
the different turnouts and a spacer. Only one of the five connectors is
required, and the spacer is only if needed for raising the switch stand. I
recommend pushing the connector into the switch stand slide bar before
cutting it off because it gives more to hold onto. There is a right side up
to the connectors and the part that snaps into the slide bar has a "T" shape
and the leg of the "T" goes down. There is a slot in the bottom of the slide
bar. These parts are Delrin plastic that is self lubricating, so no glue is
required. This is a friction fit and there is a slight snap when seated.
Mounting is the same as the ground throws, center the points between the
stock rails attach the stand to the turnout throw bar and center the handle
at half way through its travel (straight out from the stand) and attach to
the layout. Now the throw is ready to use.
In a separate bag on the back of the card you will find the spur that is
ABS plastic and has the 6 different targets on it, the 1/4 diameter gear and
two keepers, along with the blackened brass rod. These are packaged
separately so that the modeler can set these aside until the scenery is
complete so they are not damaged b a soldering iron or other tools and the
stand will throw the turnout for operating in the mean time. When you are
ready to install the targets, cut the 1/4 gear off the spur and install it
in the hole in the top of the stand when the points are centered and the
gear is centered. There is a hub on the gear and that goes in the hole. The
brass rod can now be put through the hole in the gear and into the hole
below the gear; this hole is on the side of the stand base. A drop of ACC
(super glue) will attach the rod to the gear. Choose the targets you
railroad is going to use and remove them from the spur, move the stand's
handle to one end of it's throw and glue the chosen target or targets in the
proper orientation to the shaft. After the glue dries I pull the shaft, gear
assembly out and paint the targets as required. I do it this way because the
shaft gives something to hold onto. After the paint is dry the assembly can
be re-installed into the high level. The keepers go under the top surface of
the stand and the shaft goes through the keeper, use a tweezers to hold the
keeper. Another drop of glue can be used to lock the keeper in place. I do
not use the keepers because then I can remove the target assembly at a later
date and set it along the track and not be damaged or bent during layout
maintenance or cleaning. The down side of doing this is the gears can
dis-engage during use.
